Colleen Kelly Rider Biomechanics
07 September 2011

Colleen Kelly first started her career in exercise science in rehabilitation gyms, and now, some 30 years later, is one of the world’s most sought after speakers on rider biomechanics – how the rider sits, how they affect

the horse, and how we can improve rider balance.

Her world lecture circuit includes Official Equestrian Federations & the world’s largest conferences such as Equitana & Equine Affaire. Colleen was honoured to give 15 presentations at the World Equestrian Games

(IEH Festival), and her work was recently officially recognized by the United States Dressage Federation as an Official University Program event.

Colleen received a remarkable 100% in her Official Judge’s Examination, but works with every discipline in riding: eventing, jumping, professional jockeys, polo, dressage and pony club to improve rider balance &

co-ordination.

But…it’s her Australian sense of humour that keeps audiences laughing and coming back again & again!

Possible Strangles Outbreak Perth
16 August 2010
Ends 17 August 2010

There have been some notifications of a possible strangles outbreak around Yanchep/Wanneroo, Capel and other areas.  Some horses have died and others are suspected or being monitored for infection.

At this stage Strangles is NOT confirmed in any of the cases.

I have spoken with a vet who will keep us informed of progress.  Information I have to date is:

  • Until it is confirmed as strangles or other, exercise caution but don't panic.  Use common sense.
  • Strangles does not kill (except young foals)
  • There is a cure for strangles, so if an outbreak occurs, the horse can be cured with immediate veterinary attention.
  • Vaccinating now is not likely to provide protection against the current outbreak (if it is strangles) as unless the horse is vaccinated routinely (yearly), they will require up to 3 doses, taking up to 12 -15 weeks for full cover to be obtained.
  • The cases in Capel/Busselton have not yet been confirmed, but the horses were brought in from the affected areas
  • Autopsies on the affected horses are likely in progress so more information should be available in the next few days.
  • Keep a closed gate policy until diagnosis is complete.
  • Call a vet for horses with depression, temperature, cough or mucas from the nose & keep contaminated bedding, feed, clothing, rugs, tack & water away from other horses.
  • Maintain a regular vaccination program (especially tetanus)

More information will be posted here as it becomes available.
